Parent Information on Bullying

Definition of bullying: A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and overtime, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons and he/she has difficulty defending him or herself.

In everyday language "bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean and hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending him or herself."

Key components to bullying:

  1. Involves aggressive behavior
  2. Typically involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.
  3. Imbalance of power or strength.


Definition of teasing: a person who makes fun of or annoys others; to provoke or irritate.

Effective strategies to handle bullying:

The best protection parents can offer their child is to foster confidence and self- esteem.
